Wonderful concentration yet so fresh and supremely well balanced. This is a classic example of how far the improvement in South African Cabernet Sauvignon has come. Vilafonté Seriously Old Dirt 2017, Stellenbosch  £25.85
A fascinating and super slick red with beautiful purity and poise. There is a lot going on – cherry, blueberry, spice, vanilla, chili, dark chocolate and kirsch. It’s the impeccable balance and elegance that really marks out this wine as something special and different.

Malbec 37%, Merlot 36%, Cabernet Sauvignon 26% and Cabernet Franc 1%.

Vilafonté has twice been nominated as ‘New World Winery of the Year’ by Wine Enthusiast magazine, and also receives some of the most impressive scores and ratings of any South African winery.  view

Tokara Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Stellenbosch  £26.90
96pts – Tim Atkin’s highly regarded 2018 South African Special Report – “wines of the year”.
A cracker! Pure and sensuous with piercing blackcurrant and cassis fruit, spice, herbs and cocoa. It’s very supple and moreish with silky tannins and a fantastic long aftertaste.  view

David Finlayson Camino Africana Cabernet Franc 2016, Edgebaston  £27.00
Lush and velvety with superfine tannins giving balance and structure. Raspberry fruit and hints of mint, spice and gentle smoky oak. There is more than a hint of a top quality modern styled St Emilion in this wine. What puts this wine in the ‘really good’ bracket though is its sleek, generous and seamless style.  view

Jordan Cobblers Hill 2015, Jordan Wine Estate, Stellenbosch  £28.00
Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on a farm with a history going back over 300 years.
A Bordeaux blend produced in an opulent and intense style with impressive layers of flavours and complexity. Excellent rich hints of cherry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, cedar and wood-smoke. Very harmonious with balanced grainy tannins, fine acidity and a lovely long finish. view

Gabriëlskloof, `Syrah on Sandstone` 2017  £28.65
There’s no doubt that South African Syrah is in a good place at the moment with many stellar examples. This one for me though has the right balance of quality and correct pricing (others come with a much higher price tag for similar quality). It’s beautifully refined with a lovely aromatic profile of plum, violet, spice and black olive. Although rich and full-bodied, it is so elegant and effortlessly stylish. Highly recommended.  view

Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Stellenbosch  £38.70
From the fantastic 2015 vintage, this flagship Cabernet Reserve from Le Riche can be confidently bracketed as world class. Comparable examples from Bordeaux, Napa or Australia would set you back a lot more of your hard earned cash.  view

The 1947 Chenin Blanc 2017, Kaapzicht  £43.00
A wonderful single vineyard Chenin Blanc produced from old bush vines planted in 1947. You will rarely taste a Chenin Blanc of such power and complexity, yet with such delicacy and poise. A very special bottle of wine.  view

MR De Compostella 2017, Raats Family Wines  £54.70
Legendary as the 2015 vintage is, this vintage (2017) is very close in quality yet different – with richness allied to incredible freshness. Will be fascinating in the future to see the comparisons and opinions on both!

This is definitely in the top echelons of Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux blends in the world (especially when compared in price).

43% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot.  view
