Allram Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben 2018
Austria / Lower Austria
Andy's Tasting Notes
This has for a ‘village wine’ a regal, complex and sophisticated personality which more than matches many more top rated versions of this grape variety I’ve tasted. The secret to this is the strict selection of only old vine fruit used in its production.
Peach, apricot, honey, spice and subtle minerality. Very, very classy.
Production notes – “A selection of vineyards with our oldest (30-60 years) vines. The soil is a result of the dry and cold climate of the Ice Age, and due to the effect of glaciers producing a high pressure on the land, quartz, limestone, mica and clay particles were pulverised. These loess soils retain deep reservoirs of moisture and rarely suffer from dehydration. It is here where concentrated – characteristic – authentic Grüner Veltliner thrives. Wines with a harmonious combination of strength, body, characteristic aromas and elegance are the result.”

The Allram estate is in the heart of the Kamptal, in the picturesque Strass im Strassertale. Michaela Haas-Allram took over her parents business in 1992 and has since operated the winery with her husband Erich. Allram has been one of the leading wineries of the Kamptal for decades, with holdings in the famous vineyards of Heiligenstein, Gaisberg and Renner. For the owners, the main factor of producing exceptional wines is to be found already in the vineyards. Their strong family ethos extends to all areas of the winery – with Erich and son Lorenz sharing responsibilities in the vineyards and cellar whilst Michaela and daughter Magdalena are responsible for the commercial side. Michaela’s father, Walter, is still a regular visitor out in the vineyard. The harmony of the generations is at the root of the positive philosophy. Lorenz values family traditions whilst seeking to strive for tomorrow – creating marvelous wines with distinctive varietal character. The Allram team consistently create organic, high quality wines by combining the knowledge of generations with state-of-the-art technology.
