Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata 2015, Rocche Costamagna
Italy / Piedmont
Andy's Tasting Notes
From a terrific vintage, this is a graceful and elegant Barolo yet with generosity and richness. A pronounced floral personality of violets and roses, followed by strawberry and raspberry fruit and a fanfare on the finish of spice, balsamic hints and wood-smoke.
Rocche dell’Annunziata, a single vineyard, is located in the famed ‘cru’ of La Morra, and is one of the four historic vineyards along with Brunate, Cerequio and La Serra. The best vineyards in La Morra are located in the eastern part of town: Rocche dell’Annunziata is one of the most prestigious, sheltered from the cold winds blowing from the Maritime Alps to the South and West.
Rocche refers to the highest part of a hill, and the parcel slopes down from 347 m a.s.l. to 320 m a.s.l. with most of it devoted to the growing of Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyard has a south-west aspect and is blessed with ideal growing conditions for producing Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata which is only made in the best vintages.
Decant 3 – 4 hours before serving. Keep till 2024 to 2035 for further improvement.
96 pts James Suckling – “Deliciously spiced red-cherry, blueberry, pink-grapefruit and pomegranate aromas with very attractive complexity already on release. The palate delivers a superb array of finely detailed tannins and impeccably concentrated red cherries that have pitch-perfect ripeness. This is impressive. Try from 2023.“
