Caliterra Tributo Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2018
Chile / Casablanca Valley
Andy's Tasting Notes
An astonishingly good value Chardonnay with real class, poise and distinction.
Decanter Magazine April 2020 Edition
94pts – joint top wine. Top 20 under £20: South American Chardonnay
“Great value. Even though it’s oaked, this is a style more reminiscent of Chablis on speed, majoring on vibrant, crisp, crunchy citrus and green-apple fruit. Wonderfully harmonious and persistent with an attractive leesy texture and stony quality. Real cultured and classy.”
Notes from the producer …
“A step up from the Reservas. Our Tributo wines are made to the signature style but have greater complexity achieved by longer oak ageing. Made to accompany food.”
Vineyard – From Las Dichas Vineyard in the Casablanca Valley. Granitic soils with clay and quartz.
Vintage – The cool-climate coastal region of Casablanca was even cooler than average in 2018. In some cases this meant that the grapes were harvested a full month later than in 2017. Slower ripening however meant very high-quality grapes with complex flavour profiles were harvested, producing elegant wines.
Winemaking – Fermentation: 100% whole bunch pressed, fermented in French oak barrels of 2nd and 3rd use. 27% undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Price per bottle £13.95 £10.85
Caliterra was established in 1996 as a joint venture between the families of Robert Mondavi and Viña Errazuriz. In January 2004 Viña Errazuriz became the sole owners of Caliterra, at the heart of which is the impressive 1000ha Caliterra Estate.
The name Caliterra is taken from ‘Calidad’ Spanish for quality and ‘Tierra’ – land. The wine making philosophy of Caliterra is to produce environmentally friendly, quality wines in the heart of the Colchagua Valley. The focus is around the Caliterra estate in Colchagua where 288ha are currently under vine. Crucially a large proportion of this estate, and all new plantings, are on prime hillside sites resulting in high quality fruit and complex wines.
Over the past few years, Caliterra has pioneered a move to sustainable wine production with the country’s leading consultant. The four pillars of this approach are sustainable viticulture, community commitment, environmental preservation and eco friendly packaging – Caliterra is certified sustainable – one of the very first Chilean wineries to achieve this accreditation.
