Coste del Molino Verdicchio Classico 2018, Monte Schiavo
Italy / Marche
Andy's Tasting Notes
A single vineyard Verdicchio of real quality – a brilliant value.
Production notes –
A stylish and concentrated Verdicchio with fresh intense aromas of grapefruit and lime, as well as honeyed stonefruit. The palate is fresh and fruity; very approachable, with apple, pear and ripe stone fruit. A mouthfilling minerality adds to the complexity and palate weight.
The Verdicchio vines are guyot-trained and grown on clay soils in the Coste del Molino vineyard, just west from Monte Schiavo’s main winery. Here, at around 200 metres above sea level, the grapes are hand-harvested, usually during the first 10 days in October and the average yield is 9000 kg per hectare. Temperature controlled vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, then the wine is aged on its fine lees for 3-4 months before bottling in February.
Monte Schiavo has adopted an integrated management system and is particularly attentive to the sustainability of its entire production cycle. This is achieved through non-invasive procedures in harmony with the earth, helping to preserve the great local varietal heritage of flora and fauna on the estate. This commitment to the environment has led to a conversion to organic farming and to the careful use of resources in the winery: the lighting systems, for example, have been replaced with low energy LEDs and a photovoltaic system generates electricity from solar energy.

The 350ha Monte Schiavo estate in Marche is a testament to the Pieralisi family whose background was in olive oil manufacturing equipment, but 20 years ago began to invest in agriculture, also purchasing vineyards from the co-operative within Maiolati Spontini. The estate now consists of around 100ha of vineyard, 50 ha olive groves, and other agricultural crops. They own a portfolio of prime vineyard within the Castelli di Jesi zone, and the Monte Schiavo winery is situated amongst some of their most prized plots, notably the Colle del Sole vineyard.
The success of their manufacturing business has allowed the Pieralisi family to invest heavily in the estate. They use state-of-the-art technology, and as they have grown they have strived to improve quality and reduce yields.
Monte Schiavo is one of the first companies in Italy to have obtained both BRC Global Standard for Food Safety certification (AA grade) and to be registered on the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
As of the 2019 vintage, Monte Schiavo is fully certified organic, and all the wines will be labelled accordingly.
