Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran Vitis MCM 2014

A hugely complex and fascinating red with myriad flavours and nuances. Serious, deep and structured, this inky wine is structured with chewy tannins with delicious flavours of dried blueberries, cinnamon and licquorice. To be enjoyed with hearty fayre. Decant 2 – 3 hours before serving. Or, keep for 5 – 15 years to develop further complexity.

The 26ha vineyard benefits from mild winters and very dry sunny autumns. Vines average 50 years of age; however the Tannat vines for this wine were planted on clay-limestone soils in 1900 and are
therefore well over one hundred years of age. Vines are hand tended and hand harvested and during the slow thirty day fermentation pigeage is manual. This ‘true’ Madiran is then aged for a total of eighteen months which includes twelve months in new oak.
