Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve 2015, Errazuriz
Chile / Aconcagua Valley
Andy's Tasting Notes
Always a new world classic – this vintage (2015) has more refinement and poise yet hasn’t lost its appealing richness and complexity. With ace wine-maker Francisco Baettig at the helm (he also makes the stunningly good Las Pizarras Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) this Cabernet dominated blend oozes class and elegance with supreme structure, freshness and multi-layered nuances.
67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenere, 8% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc.
The Don Maximiano vineyard is located in the Aconcagua Valley and the oldest among them are Max I, Max II and Max V blocks. The region has a long dry season with moderately warm summer days cooled by the soft evening breezes that enter the valley from the Pacific Ocean. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere vines were planted in 1978 and 1993, respectively, while the Petit Verdot was planted in 1999. The three vineyard blocks that contribute grapes for Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve are planted on north or northeast facing hillsides with 5°–25° of slope.

The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley – 100km North of the capital. Recognising that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world class vineyard.
Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business.
Eduardo has overseen the modernisation of the winemaking technology at this historic Estate whilst maintaining a distinct identity for its wines.
Errazuriz is one of the first Chilean wineries to earn the certification of sustainability granted by Vinos de Chile and the Vinnova-Tecnovid Consortium, demonstrating yet again how its wines are not only of a very high quality, but also faithfully reflect the terroir of the Valle de Aconcagua with concern for the environment and its community. The certification affirms that Errazuriz complies with a series of requirements in its lands located throughout the Valle de Aconcagua and makes it one of the first Chilean wineries to obtain this certification. Among the primary requirements, Errazuriz stands out for the measurement of its water and carbon footprints, precision agriculture with vigour photographs, and erosion control.

Awards & Critic Reviews
96 pts, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2017. “Very refined and pretty with tight polished tannins and a linear and fruity mouthfeel. Medium body, precise and focused. It shows the essence of cab character. Feminine style.”
95 pts, Decanter Magazine (at Decanter’s Fine Wine Encounter 2018, Shanghai, 17 Nov 2018)
“If the 1984 was a pre-Parker wine, this is its ‘post-Parker’ incarnation. Winemaker Francisco Baettig has fashioned a really super-fresh, drinkable and elegant 2015 Don Max from what was a cooler vintage. It has beautifully delineated cassis and blackberry coulis fruit with a touch of cream on the mid-palate, but this is all about the gorgeously focussed fruit in combination with fine-grained tannins and lively, balanced acidity. There’s lots of lift, sophistication and pleasure on offer here now, and for many years to come.” John Stimpfig
