Esk Valley Pinot Gris 2019

New Zealand / Hawkes Bay

Andy's Tasting Notes

Properly dry Pinot Gris with delicious richness and complexity offset by appealing freshness and clarity.  Baked pear, peach, nutmeg and herby honey influences.

Production notes – The 2019 harvest was one of the finest Winemaker Gordon Russell has ever experienced. Spring was cool and wet and the weather over key flowering periods seemed unkind at the time. Crops were eventually down as much as 25%, but this alone does not explain the quality of the fruit at harvest. Summer was fine and warm with intermittent rain keeping a drought prone province green, the vines seemingly never under any stress.Veraison  though had proceeded quickly over a fine spell of weather which would give consistency to the ripeness of berries. Harvest arrived slightly early but no records were broken here. In fact it seemed very much a normal harvest until we approached our first pick. The berries though had developed abnormally thick skins blessed with an abundance of colour and flavour. This coupled with a spell of fine weather over harvest period, allowed us to pick when full ripeness had been achieved.

The grapes were harvested in the morning while temperatures were cool and processed as quickly and gently as possible to avoid colour and tannin pick up from the pink Pinot Gris berries. The juice was settled before fermentation in both tank and large old oak barrels. The finished wine was left on its yeast lees with regular stirring until bottling in June 2019.

Producer Info

Esk Valley is a boutique winery, but it is unique in that many of the techniques used to craft its award-winning wines are dictated by the winery itself. The old concrete vats, the layout of the buildings, and the absence of modern technology mean the winemakers at Esk Valley have had to make wine in a simple, honest, hands-on way.

Situated in the north of New Zealand’s picturesque Hawkes Bay, at Bay View is the Esk Valley Estate winery. The winery sources fruit from Hawkes Bay, including the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels, and Marlborough, as both regions consistently produce grapes of an extremely high quality.

An active and accredited member of Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand (SWNZ). All Esk Valley’s vineyards are accredited by SWNZ and the viticultural team has worked hard to get all contract suppliers accredited as well.
