La Val Finca Arantei Albariño 2021

Spain / Galicia

Andy's Tasting Notes

This is one of our bestselling Spanish white wines and, being produced from a single vineyard, is a terrific example of this grape variety.

When compared to top rated Albariño wines from other producers, we have always thought that it was very well priced at around £16.00 for its superb quality.

However, a change in price is on the horizon. Bodegas La Val were recently bought out by the CVNE group (Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España, The Northern Spanish Wine Company), and with the new 2022 vintage they are repositioning the price to circa £23.00.

So, we jumped in and purchased the last stock of the delicious 2021 vintage, and can continue to offer it at the current price of £16.40.

If this is one of your favourites then grab a few bottles before the price hike trips in when the 2021 vintage sells out!

It will continue to drink well till end of 2024 at least.

Good vine age gives you an Albarino with classic elegance yet more depth and intensity.

Production notes –
The Albariño grapes for this wine are sourced from the single Arantei estate at the extreme south of Condado de Tea – where it is the first vineyard in the region to begin harvesting. Arantei is a 35 hectare vineyard, around 22 years old, located in the old river bed – where pebbles are a main feature in the rich clay and mineral soil. It has a southerly aspect, aiding ripening. Harvesting is by hand, with careful grape selection. The grapes are destemmed, undergo a 6 hour cold maceration at 10ºC (to add texture to the wine), and are then fermented using natural yeasts in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. The wine is rested on its lees for at least 3 months before bottling, with regular batonnage.

Lifted, floral aromas of citrus and peach. Minerality on the palate is balanced by stone fruit, lime and white spice – giving a long, crisp and zesty finish.

Producer Info

This Rías Baixas pioneer was founded in 1985 and has made its name over the past two decades for producing classically-styled, great quality Albariño. There are five sub-regions in Rías Baixas. Bodegas La Val are based in Condado do Tea – away from the coast and just over the Portuguese border.

In 2003, a brand new winery was built in Arantei, overlooking the Miño river, equipped with the most modern winemaking equipment. Its vines are around thirty years old and they are grown on the Pergola system, as is typical in the region. This aids the ventilation of the grapes, protecting them from excess humidity and mositure that leads to rot. All fruit is hand-harvested.

With over 90 hectares of vineyards across the region, La Val is one of the largest vineyard owners in Rías Baixas, and all its wines are produced from its own grapes. As a result, it is one of the most reliable sources of good quality, moderately-priced Albariño.
