Another stunning vintage – 2016 Las Pizarras Chardonnay from Errazuriz. 4945 bottles produced.
Errazuriz’s philosophy is best expressed by Don Maximiano who said, “From the best land, the best wine.” Vina Errazuriz believe in the concept of ‘terroir’ and strive to produce the finest wines by controlling every stage of the winemaking process, from grape growing in the Aconcagua and Casablanca valleys, to winemaking with the most natural techniques. An emphasis is placed on the delicate handling of the wines, with the aim of producing wines with elegance and complexity.

95 pts Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate (239) – “I had the luck of tasting two vintages of the Chardonnay from slate/schist soils side by side, including the 2016 Aconcagua Costa “Las Pizarras” Chardonnay. The juice from the whole clusters decanted for 24 hours, fermented in oak barrels with indigenous yeasts and then aged in barriques for 14 months. It’s a little more compressed than the 2017 and has good, vibrant flavors with some floral notes and some gentler flavors, perhaps more similar to the 2014, with the austere schist minerality but with more volume and juicy fruit. There is a little more malolactic in this year. If people have the idea that 2015 is warmer than 2016 and that 2017 is again warmer, the character of these Aconcagua Costa bottlings is the opposite: 2015 and 2017 are fresher, and 2016 is a little warmer. This sometimes happens, as the cooler years are harvested later and the warmer ones see an earlier harvest, so that the wines are exactly the opposite of what you expect. This is great, and its only problem is being tasted next to the 2017, which is otherworldly.” October 2018

The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley – 100km North of the capital. Recognising that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world class vineyard.
Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business.
Eduardo has overseen the modernisation of the winemaking technology at this historic Estate whilst maintaining a distinct identity for its wines.
Errazuriz is one of the first Chilean wineries to earn the certification of sustainability granted by Vinos de Chile and the Vinnova-Tecnovid Consortium, demonstrating yet again how its wines are not only of a very high quality, but also faithfully reflect the terroir of the Valle de Aconcagua with concern for the environment and its community.
The certification affirms that Errazuriz comples with a series of requirements in its lands located throughout the Valle de Aconcagua and makes it one of the first Chilean wineries to obtain this certification. Among the primary requirements, Errazuriz stands out for the measurement of its water and carbon footprints, precision agriculture with vigour photographs, and erosion control.
