Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

South Africa / Stellenbosch

Andy's Tasting Notes

A Cabernet Sauvignon that in the 2017 vintage is probably a smidge superior to the equally fantastic 2015 vintage (which we also stock – a bottle of each to compare would be a great idea!).

Truly world class.  Decant 2 – 3 hours before serving.  Drink now or keep hold of till 2035 and watch it turn into something of breathtaking beauty.

Cabernet is not a forgiving grape. It needs to be treated with respect and tended with a level of understanding that only comes from years of training and work. If done right, the result is a wine with powerful yet refined, elegant tannins. Finding that balance is the true art.
Christo Le Riche, Director and Cellar Master

Reserve status is only endowed if the grapes and resulting wine measures up to exceptional standard. Hand selected grapes from older, lower yielding vines are used.  24 Months in 225L French oak, 70% new.

“Youthful, vigorous and focused, it has capsicum and pencil shaving top notes, layered damson and blackcurrant fruit, racy acidity and structured, dense, age worthy tannins. Very classy indeed.” 96 pts, Tim Atkin MW

Producer Info

Le Riche is a family run estate founded by Etienne Le Riche in 1996. Situated close to the historic town of Stellenbosch, the winery is perched on the slopes of the Heldeberg Mountain and surrounded by the majestic Hottentots Holland Mountain range.

Le Riche are known as ‘Cabernet Masters’ and rightly so. They select grapes from the best possible Stellenbosch terroirs to craft top quality Cabernets with superb cellaring potential.

These wines are elegant and classy with fine grained tannins and subtle oak integration, and while not aiming to be Bordeaux replicas, they do have much in common with the balance and poise sometimes found in top Margaux. With most of their wines sold domestically, it’s a rare treat to find these wines on UK soils. Production is 8000 ×6 cases a year, with the Reserve range consisting of only 1000 cases.
