MR De Compostella 2017, Raats Family Wines
South Africa / Stellenbosch
Andy's Tasting Notes
Legendary as the 2015 vintage is, this vintage (2017) is very close in quality yet different – with richness allied to incredible freshness. Will be fascinating in the future to see the comparisons and opinions on both!
This is definitely in the top echelons of Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux blends in the world (especially when compared in price).
43% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot.
Production notes – 24 months in French oak (33% new). The grapes come from Stellenbosch and are grown only on decomposed dolomite granite soils. This lends itself to great acidity, freshness and an extended mineral finish. The aim with this wine was to take each of the five components and make a varietal wine in it’s own right. The wines were then tasted blind after one year in barrel. The wines that scored less than 90 points were not considered for the final blend. The percentage components of the blend were determined by the scores achieved in the blind tasting. The resultant cuvee is called De Compostella (‘The Compilation of Stars’). Each variety spent 12 months in barrel as a single variety wine before the wines were blended. Thereafter the blended wine was matured for another 12 months, giving a total of 24 months in barrel, a third of which was in new French Oak, a further third in 2nd fill and a final third in 3rd fill French oak barrels.

The formation of MR de Compostella epitomizes the meeting of two strong winemaking minds and an existing friendship between Mzokona Mvemve (the M) and Bruwer Raats (the R). de Compostella itself refers to a constellation of stars, with each shining star being a tiny addition to the larger blend of the galaxy that makes for something spectacular.
Winemaker, Bruwer Raats, tasting note – “With MR De Compostella, we set out to achieve consistent, world-class quality wine every vintage. To do this, we ensured that the five Bordeaux varieties that we cultivate – namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and of course, our speciality, Cabernet Franc – are planted in the soil they are each best suited to. This results in a lot of small parcels in our vineyards – sometimes there will be a row or two of Cabernet Sauvignon in the far left corner of that vineyard, or some Malbec in the very specific right hand corner of this one. It’s not exactly practical, but it’s the only way we can make magic happen.”.
Raats Family Wines – Bruwer Raats is a gentle giant of a man and his reputation is starting to match his stature – “the most exciting and forward thinking winemaker” in Stellenbosch. As part of the new wave of South African winemakers he crafts soil specific wines that embody the unique characteristics of the region. With hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing and using natural fermentation without fining or filtering it helps him create wines that are world class.
