Pagos del Galir Mencia 2019, Virgen del Galir

Mencia is one of my favourite grape varieties – combining rich cherry fruit with contrasting toasty oak, minerality, spice, herb and balsamic notes together with integrated tannins and a beautifully fresh and elegant balance.

Incredibly versatile – match with roasts, casseroles or rich vegetable dishes.

The Virgen del Galir winery sources its grapes from its own 20 hectares of vineyards, at an altitude of over 600m. The premium grapes are sourced from terraces composed of chalk and decomposed granite soils, which gives the fruit complexity, minerality and elegance. The climate is continental with Atlantic influence and the annual precipitation is 700-1,000mm depending on the areas. Winter are very cold, summers very warm.

Founded in 2002, Virgen del Galir, a relative youngster, focuses on building the reputation for Godello and Mencia in the premium Valdeorras appellation.
