Pinot Gris Fruehmess Vieilles Vignes 2016, Gerard Metz

Andy's Tasting Notes
This has a lovely balance of ripeness, acidity and rich yet elegant fruit. Pleasingly spicy and smoky – texturally it is concentrated yet refreshing and supremely subtle.
A top class producer rarely seen in this country, but whose wines can be found on the wine lists of many of the smartest restaurants in France.

This domaine of 12 hectares in the beautiful village of Itterswiller is run by the laconic Eric Casimir, Champenois by birth, who brings an observant, self critical approach to the winemaking process. He believes in picking at optimum, rather than maximum, ripeness so that, for example, the old vines Gewürztraminer has just the right richness of texture to show the spicy aromatics to their best advantage. The wines are uniformly excellent with great depth of flavour (an average vine age of 35 years helps here) and real varietal character.
