Robert Oatley Vineyards
Robert Oatley The Pennant Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Australia / Western Australia
Andy's Tasting Notes
I’ve been privileged (and lucky!) to taste many ‘icon’ Western Australian reds this year, but I would have to say that for its price to quality ratio this example from Robert Oatley Vineyards is in a league of its own.
This is no new world fruit-bomb (with an alcohol level below many Bordeaux Classed Growths). It’s a concentrated complex yet ultimately refined, poised and elegant example. The tannin structure is fine and impeccable – with a supple and luxurious structure and finish. Truly superb.
Drink now, or hold till 2028.
The Pennant wines stand at the pinnacle of the Oatley family’s winemaking expression. Just two varietals are produced: Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are handmade wines produced in very limited quantities – from the best barrels of the most prized vineyard blocks.
Hand selected, the grapes run down an individual berry sorting table, into small vessels to ferment on skins for up to 8 weeks. Twelve months in tight-grained, low-toast French oak, prior to rigorous barrel selection to compile this final blend.
Normal RRP is circa £40.00
Price per bottle £40.00 £33.85
Robert Oatley Vineyards is the latest venture of the Oatley family wine-making dynasty, which was founded by the late industry legend Bob Oatley. His legacy continues in his eldest son Sandy, who worked alongside his father for many years and manages the business today.
Created in 2006, Robert Oatley Vineyards aims to embody the best that Australia can produce where classic grape varieties are matched to the leading wine regions of Australia. Along with grapes from the family properties, some dating back to 1858, the Oatley family draw upon select growers of excellence across a diverse range of climatic regions. A deep understanding of viticulture enables the team to identify the best vineyard sites in Australia.
The talented wine-making team is led by Larry Cherubino – one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers.
Vineyards are tended as organically as possible and wines are made with minimal intervention, reflecting a dedication to sustainable grape growing and wine production practices. The team ensures available resources are used efficiently. The effects of the winery operations on the environment are minimised and materials are recycled wherever possible. The winery holds the ISO 14001 certification.

Awards & Critic Reviews
Halliday Wine Companion Awards – Top Rated Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
97 Points – “Excellent hue; the super-fragrant and expressive bouquet doesn’t prepare you for the unadulterated power of the palate, putting this in the class of the super-cabernets that are the flagship wines of the First Families in Margaret River. It has tiers of fruit, one on top of each other, and so on, and so forth, the tannins there in respectful attendance, giving rise to perfect balance. Oh, and yes, there’s lots of new French oak.“
