Robert Oatley Vineyards
Robert Oatley The Pennant Chardonnay 2012
Australia / Western Australia
Andy's Tasting Notes
Beautiful. With bottle age this is now drinking at its peak. Very Burgundian in style. Outstanding price to quality.
The Pennant wines stand at the pinnacle of the Oatley family’s winemaking expression. Just two varietals are produced: Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are handmade wines produced in very limited quantities – from the best barrels of the most prized vineyard blocks.
2012 was an outstanding year for Chardonnay; it was generally a cool Margaret River season but with the perfect amount of warmth in the day to achieve optimum flavour ripeness with excellent acidity.
The cool Margaret River season delivered excellent grapes, which were hand selected and harvested from specific rows on a very special vineyard at Karridale in the south of Margaret River.
Chilled, whole bunch pressed into new and one year-old, tight-grained, low-toast French oak, where the juice was allowed to undergo natural yeast ferment followed by months in barrel, without racking or movement, prior to rigorous selection to compile this final blend. Just 7 barrels produced.
Price per bottle £32.00 £26.50

Created in 2006, Robert Oatley Vineyards aims to embody the best that Australia can produce where classic grape varieties are matched to the leading wine regions of Australia. Along with grapes from the family properties, some dating back to 1858, the Oatley family draw upon select growers of excellence across a diverse range of climatic regions. A deep understanding of viticulture enables the team to identify the best vineyard sites in Australia.
The talented wine-making team is led by Larry Cherubino – one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers.
