Maranges is a newish appellation just to the south of Santenay with, as yet, no established international reputation so excellent value may be found. Maurice and his son Vincent make really characterful wines with plenty of dense fruit and elegant structure. When they put ‘old vines’ on the label we’re not talking 25 or 30 years as is often the case, these vines are 65-70 years old and it shows in the concentration of the wines; they are supple but packed with fruit and redolent of their terroir – there is a stony minerality just beneath the fruitiness, a quality shared by the neighbouring appellations at this end of the Côte de Beaune, Santenay and Chassagne Montrachet.
