Santiago Ruiz, `Rosa Ruiz` Rías Baixas Albariño 2018
Andy's Tasting Notes
Oh boy – this is a really special Albariño. Superb intensity yet so elegant. The balancing minerality and saline hints add further to its appeal. Intense yet supremely elegant hints of peach, grapefruit, lime and candied fruits. Pleasingly floral and fresh with a super long and lingering aftertaste.
Named after the youngest daughter of Santiago Ruiz the founder, who inherited her father’s love for the land and an eye for the finer details. Rosa Ruiz is the second wine created since the modern winery’s foundation in 1984. This wine is made from a special parcel of old vine Albariño.
The O Rosal area enjoys a privileged location within the Rías Baixas DO, with more sun exposure and lower rainfall than other subzones. Santiago Ruiz’s 38 hectares are planted with native white grape varieties including Albariño, Loureiro, Treixadura, Caíño Blanco and Godello. This site benefits from an even more favourable microclimate thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Miño River. Trained along trellises, the fruit experiences optimal aeration and sun exposure, leading to excellent grape maturation.
The 2018 vintage in Rías Baixas was very good. The rain in May was balanced by the dry weather conditions, high temperatures and sunshine in August and September which allowed the veraison phase to develop properly. The grapes were harvested in great conditions in September.
Price per bottle £17.90
The Ruiz family have been making wines in Galicia since the 1860s. Ángel Ruiz, Santiago’s grandfather, was one of the first people to produce and bottle wines in the region. Santiago then picked up the baton and continued the pioneering spirit of his grandfather by installing the first ever stainless-steel tanks in Rías Baixas. Santiago’s daughter, Rosa, is now at the helm and treads the fine line between continuing the family traditions and embracing new advances in wine-making. The new winery, built in 2007, is fully equipped with the latest advances in technology for making clean, expressive white wines.
