Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 2011
France / Champagne
Andy's Tasting Notes
Limited stock. Another great, classic Comtes vintage combining elegance and finesse with richness, minerality and perfect balance.
100% Chardonnay. Produced in the cellars of the former Saint-Nicaise abbey (13th century) in Reims, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs receives all the lavish care and attention it needs to reach its peak, and is only created if all of the following conditions are present, to make it such a rare luxury:
1. The Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs cuvée is made entirely from Chardonnays from only the best vines in the prestigious Côte des Blancs including Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant.
2. It is only produced when the harvest is of exceptional quality worthy of a vintage year.
3. Only the wine from the first press – the Cuvée- is used: a sure guarantee of finesse.
4. 5% of the wines used to make it have aged for 4 months in new oak barrels (a third of which are renewed every year), enhancing the intrinsic qualities of the final blend.
Only after slow and patient ageing for many years in the Saint Nicaise chalk pits (Crayères) does this cuvée of exceptional quality come out into the light.

Producer Info
Taittinger remains one of the few Champagne Houses to remain owned and actively managed by the family named on the label. Taittinger owns 288 hectares of vineyards in the best localities of Champagne making it the second largest domaine owner in the region. The most famous of these are the vineyards surrounding Château de la Marquetterie and parcels in the prestigious Côte des Blancs.
All the Chardonnay grapes used in the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs come from the 100% rated vineyards of Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Mesnil-Sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. Their winemaking approach produces a Champagne style of elegance, delicacy and finesse which is recognised worldwide and has earned the House many accolades and awards over the years. Taittinger’s home is situated above miles of chalk tunnels and cellars.
These 4th century UNESCO listed cellars once belonged to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of St Nicaise and are perfect for the slow ageing process required for great Champagne. Taittinger is under the “authorisation préfectorale”, a French government local representation, which requires it to follow certain environmental procedures. Examples include: industrial waste classed and weighed in by different type, card, wood, glass, plastic, aluminium and taken to recycling plants. Taittinger is also undertaking a number of steps to respect official environmental regulations on water and waste as well as implementing a plan to reduce their environmental impact concerning energy usage, water and waste.
