Taittinger Folies de la Marquetterie nv
France / Champagne
Andy's Tasting Notes
Somebody once said to me “This is the Champagne to drink when the budget won’t extend to a bottle of Krug!”. Some truth in this comment – this is Taittinger’s richest style of Champagne with a proportion of the wine fermented in oak casks (like Krug).
Gloriously full flavoured yet graceful and harmonious like all top quality Champagne. A blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, aged for a minimum of 5 years before release.
Unusual too in that this is a single vineyard wine produced from the Taittinger families Chateau de la Marquetterie in Pierry near Epernay.
Price per bottle £49.00
Taittinger remains one of the few Champagne Houses to remain owned and actively managed by the family named on the label.
Taittinger owns 288 hectares of vineyards in the best localities of Champagne making it the second largest domaine owner in the region. The most famous of these are the vineyards surrounding Château de la Marquetterie and parcels in the prestigious Côte des Blancs.
Their winemaking approach produces a Champagne style of elegance, delicacy and finesse which is recognised worldwide and has earned the House many accolades and awards over the years. Taittinger’s home is situated above miles of chalk tunnels and cellars. These 4th century UNESCO listed cellars once belonged to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of St Nicaise and are perfect for the slow ageing process required for great Champagne.
Taittinger is under the “authorisation préfectorale”, a French government local representation, which requires it to follow certain environmental procedures. Examples include: industrial waste classed and weighed in by different type, card, wood, glass, plastic, aluminium and taken to recycling plants. Taittinger is also undertaking a number of steps to respect official environmental regulations on water and waste as well as implementing a plan to reduce their environmental impact concerning energy usage, water and waste.
