Tobia Seleccion De Autor Tinto 2016, Bodegas Tobia
Spain / Aragon
Andy's Tasting Notes
Richly fruity with a sensationally elegant structure. Clearly of Reserva status although eschewing the official barrel-ageing related classification, this has great depth and texture of red berry fruit (raspberry, cherry) with beautifully ripe tannins and intriguing cocoa and spicy hints on a very long finish. “Glossy” is the word that irresistibly comes to mind when considering the brightness of the fruit and the impeccable balance of firm texture and silky tannins. Great value too.

Now installed (since 2010) in purpose-built premises in a village near Haro, this award – winning bodega is really pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Rioja. Oscar Tobía’s approach is to combine the best of Riojan tradition with a thoroughly up-to-date attention to detail in the vineyard and the cellar. To supplement the fruit from his own vineyards he works closely with carefully selected growers to control yields and quality and therefore has access to grapes from all three of Rioja’s sub-zones. By means of an extensive and ongoing research project he is constantly developing his understanding of fermentation techniques. The basic approach however, is fairly straightforward – healthy, fully ripe fruit is fashioned into a range of excellent wines, from un-oaked, early drinking styles to classic crianza and reserva wines and the outstanding top-of-the-range Alma de Tobía selection. Oscar’s wines are regularly selected by the Rioja regulatory authorities as the best of the region.
