Vidal Reserve Syrah Gimblett Gravels 2018, Vidal
New Zealand / Hawkes Bay
Andy's Tasting Notes
If you love good Crozes Hermitage but not the price – try this as an attractive alternative!
There is a touch of the Northern Rhone about this fragrant Syrah, with classic aromas and flavours of dark red fruits, black pepper, spice and violet. An unusually elegant new world version with good tannin balance and crisp acidity.
“Naturally, free draining and low vigour soils, meticulous vineyard management and the 2018 season produced grapes with intense varietal character, depth and clarity of flavour. Naturally low yields and “green harvesting” has resulted in good fruit concentration balanced with fresh natural acidity, typical of our region and wines.” Vidal
Vidal is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) and BioGro certified, meaning it is accredited to process grapes grown using organic principles.

“At Vidal we believe that great wine starts in the vineyard. We’re passionate about achieving a natural balance because we know that healthy vines working in harmony with living earth make the most delicious wine.” Ollie Powrie, Chief Viticulturist
The Vidal winery is situated on the original site in Hastings, Hawkes Bay, which was purchased by its founder Anthony Joseph Vidal back in 1905. Back then the site was a rural location, today though it is now in the heart of residential suburbia. Limitations on space and restricted operating times have meant a move to a new state-of-the art winemaking facility in the Gimblett Gravels.
Viticulture and winemaking are overseen by Ollie Powrie and Andrew Lebioda, both of whom have a wealth of experience working with the vineyards and grapes of New Zealand’s key regions.
Vidal is dedicated to environmentally friendly winemaking and sustainable winegrowing practices. This mindset allows Vidal to contribute to New Zealand’s “clean, green” image and increase quality assurance from vineyard through to the finished wine. Vidal was a founding member of the Living Wine group, a small group of wineries who gained ISO 14001 certification in 1998, having achieved a globally recognised standard in environmental management systems. The winery is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) and BioGro certified, meaning it is accredited to process grapes grown using organic principles.
