Villa Maria Single Vineyard Keltern Chardonnay 2019
New Zealand / Hawkes Bay
Andy's Tasting Notes
This wine has received such consistent accolades and praise that I can only add my own humble recommendation to the long roll call of honour! Everything you want from world class Chardonnay – power, poise, complexity and great ageing ability.
A truly outstanding example. If you can, keep it for a couple of years to improve further.
Producer notes – Vineyard: Villa Maria’s Single Vineyard wines are individuals – varietal wines which exhibit characteristics specific to their terroir of origin and vintage characteristics of their particular micro-climates. They are one-off parcels with limited production, and as such Single Vineyard wines are never exactly the same, nor necessarily produced every year.
The Keltern Vineyard was established in 1999. Sitting east of Maraekakaho and hugging the western edge of the Bridge Pa Triangle and the Ngaruroro river, this unique site has over time become synonymous with Chardonnay, earning its place amongst New Zealand’s finest.
Producer notes – Winemaking: Fermented with 100% wild, indigenous yeast and fermented in French Barriques of which 27% were new with the balance 1 and 2 years old. It was then matured for 10 months in barriques.

In Auckland, New Zealand, on International Chardonnay Day (27 May 2020), three Villa Maria Single Vineyard Chardonnays – Keltern (Hawkes Bay), Taylors Pass (Marlborough) and Ihumatao (Auckland), were tasted blind amongst a selection of fifteen of the finest examples of Chardonnay from around the world including Burgundy, USA, South America and Australia.
Guided by Matthew Deller MW and Villa Maria chief winemaker Nick Picone, wine critics and guests were taken through three blind flights of five wines, each featuring one of the Villa Maria Single Vineyard wines. The tasting was a true triumph for New Zealand Chardonnay as the Villa Maria Single Vineyard wines in each flight equalled and at times exceeded their counterparts with elegance, harmonious balance, complexity and finesse.
“International Chardonnay Day was an incredible opportunity to taste several of the world’s finest Chardonnays side-by-side and completely anonymous,’ said Matthew Deller MW. ‘What we learnt, is that New Zealand has evolved into a great Chardonnay producing country and that Villa Maria’s single vineyard Chardonnays from regions as diverse as Auckland, Hawkes Bay and Marlborough are truly world class.”
