Harvest at Domaine François Pinon (photo credit Domaine François Pinon)
Time to revisit an old classic. Vouvray has somewhat fallen off the wine drinkers’ radar – for what reason we know not why!?
However, rediscover this lovely wine with the 3 fantastic examples below – Chenin Blanc at its very best!
François et Julien Pinon, Loire
Located 5km north east of Vouvray in the Vallée de Cousse this family run 37 acre estate, established in 1786, has seven generations of knowledge and skill backing up its reputation for producing some of the very best examples of Vouvray in the region.
In 1987 François Pinon took over from his father, and to emphasise his passion for having ecologically friendly vineyards François combined traditional vineyard practices such as short pruning, low yields, hand harvesting and grape selection with the latest vinification technology and careful cellar practices.
Since 2003 the estate has been following and operating within the principles of organic agriculture and now comprises 15 organically farmed hectares, spread across 15 different plots – mainly on the varied clay, limestone and silex soils located towards the head of the Vallée de Cousse, which are widely rated amongst the best sites within the appellation.
Sadly, François passed away in June 2020 leaving this hugely respected and loved estate in the very capable hands of his son Julien, who took over the overall running of the estate in 2018.
We have recently added three of their wines to our range. These are pristine, age worthy examples of Vouvray, and I highly recommend them to you. Andy
Vouvray Sec 2019
A fine vintage in Vouvray where low yields combined with ripe fruit and excellent acidity produced beautifully complete and balanced wines.
This ‘dry’ (Sec) version has lovely texture with classic Chenin Blanc apple, pear, acacia and scented honey characteristics. It has an appealing initial softness counterbalanced by a refreshing hint of citrussy acidity. Lovely long aftertaste.
Though pleasing now, will gain more depth and complexity and last 20+ years if well cellared – developing dreamy honey, cream and exotic fruit overtones.
Vouvray ‘Les Déronnières’ 2019
Produced from 50+ year old vines, this is a very special site specific bottling produced on clay and limestone rather silex (flint) soils.
Showing pronounced minerality with a delicious subtle fruit overtone of quince, baked apple and orange oil. The finish is chalky and zesty with an appealing dryness and zip.
Treat this like a young red wine in its youth, and decant to open up its delightful floral and aromatic top notes.
Will age and develop wonderfully for 15 – 20 years.
Vouvray Petillant Brut 2017
The Pinon’s also have an excellent reputation for their Champagne method sparkling wine, which exudes crisp and fresh tasting flavours of orchard fruits coupled with baked apple and zingy acidity. A lovely mousse and gently dry yet creamy finish. Appealing, rounded and invigorating.
Will age well, developing a moreish, soft peaches and cream finish.
