Vidal of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Vidal are owned by the ubiquitous Villa Maria group, but are operated totally separately with their own winey and winemaker – the uber talented Hugh Crichton. Hugh has been working at Vidal since 2004, and became the Estate Winemaker in 2006.

Prior to joining Vidal, Hugh had established a solid winemaking career both in New Zealand and overseas, working vintages at Chateau Soutard Grande Cru Classe in Saint Emilion France, Chard Farm in Central Otago, Donnafugata in Italy and several at Millton Vineyards in Gisborne where his inspiration for environmentally conscious and organic winemaking and viticulture was fostered.

With the financial muscle and backing of Villa Maria, Vidal are able to operate autonomously yet within a framework that allows them to offer their multi-awarding winning wines at very competitive prices.

We hope you will enjoy discovering them too!

Vidal offer a 3 tier range – Estate, Reserve and Legacy – and all over deliver within their price ranges. What impresses us the most though is the refined, yet characterful and balanced style of the wines. No ‘big’ over the top fruit or oak bombs here. Everything is produced to accentuate the quality of the vineyards without overpowering the wines.

The Estate range represents wines to enjoy every day, offering excellent quality wine that is delightful and approachable.

The Reserve wines are elegant and characterful with true regional identity.

The Legacy range is made in limited quantities representing the ultimate expression of Hawkes Bay with true varietal flavours and sourced from exceptional vineyard sites. These premium wines come from small, expertly selected grape parcels and are the pinnacle of the estate.

In 1898 Anthony Joseph Vidal arrived in New Zealand and was one of the first winemakers to appreciate the natural potential of Hawkes Bay. In 1905 he purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable yard and set about converting it into a cellar and winery.

It was from there he became one of New Zealand’s early wine innovators. His commitment to crafting classic, elegant wines remains an inspiration to this day. Family owned until the 1970’s, Vidal was purchased in 1976 by George Fistonich who has consistently built upon Vidal’s reputation as a quality wine producer ever since.

Vidal Estate is also home to New Zealand’s original winery restaurant opening in 1979- a true epicurean experience.
